Oslo City Hall’s listed council chamber and the DIS DCS 6000 Digital Conference System have resulted in a perfect synergy where cutting edge technology merges with mid 20th century interior design. Thus providing the councillors with the most advanced conference technology available today.
All seats are equipped with flush mount microphone units incorporating chip card registration, voting buttons and loudspeaker. Furthermore all councillors have been equipped with a new laptop and in conjunction with their use in every day city business these have been set up as thin clients connecting to DIS SW 6000 applications running on an SQL terminal server. The application contains agenda, speaker and request list information, voting results and messaging.
Each laptop is set up with a Windows Remote Desktop connection that accesses the Conference User Application directly on the terminal server. When activated the remote desktop allows the councillor access to the SW 6000 application as if it was installed on the laptop but which in reality is running on the terminal server.
The advantage of running applications directly on the terminal server is that there are no specific hardware requirements for the thin clients. Inexpensive clients of moderate specification can be applied as a cost-effective solution in large installations. Another advantage of running applications on a terminal server is the decrease in installation and maintenance work. In a normal client/server installation all the clients would have to be pre-configured and have the applications installed on each and every client. In a thin client/server environment there is no need for pre-configuring, installing and maintaining the DIS applications on the clients as this takes place on the terminal server alone.
